A recent report by the Global Council on Brain Health (a collaborative from AARP) has highlighted that keeping oneself socially involved either by meeting family, friends, engaging in social activities or being connected with the world through social media keeps one’s mind healthy and fit.

In my PhD work I have got similar results, where participation in social activities has emerged as an important determinant of healthy ageing.

The report by the Global Council on Brain Health has also emphasised that social media is playing an important role in connecting the senior citizens with the world. This is an important contribution of social media towards promotion of healthy and active ageing. We launched Senior Express with the same intention of connecting our seniors with the world and with the latest development in various fields so that they can keep themselves positive and fit.

It is true that involvement in Social Activities certainly gives relief to all in general and particularly seniors and others in isolation. The tradition of family & community celebrations should be organized with the participation. This is still going on in rural areas. But in the case of urban areas, the isolation or mechanization has resulted for more of financial connectivity rather than human connectivity. I am associating with the seniors at community level and having interventions on regular basis. This is resulting for better relief and facilitation for need based services and supports. In this direction, the Senior group & welfare society at colony level can do the needful with need based care and other supports either directly or through facilitation.

Thank you Mr. Nagisetty for sharing such valuable points. Senior citizen’s group must form a support system for themselves.
