    In general, India has low health insurance coverage (less than 4%). This becomes an acute concern for the elderly population where the coverage drops down to less than 1%. With increase in longevity this is going to become a serious issue in coming times.     This reminds me of the UNFPA India report “Report on the Status of Elderly in Select States of India,2011” on which I worked at Tata Institute of Social Sciences. Similar trends were reported in this report also.

    Senior citizens need to carefully evaluate the existing health Insurance products and should adequately cover themselves to avoid any financial losses due to medical emergencies.
